Day Two of the 15th UNESCO/IOC-ODC Training Course: Wave Mixing, Ocean Governance, and Toolkit Practice in ParallelOn 2 September, the 15th UNESCO/IOC-ODC Training Course on Ocean Dynamics and Ocean Models entered its second day at the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO), Ministry of Natural Resources. The day's programme was rich and diverse, covering wave-turbulence mixing mechanisms, global ocean governance, and hands-on practice with ocean numerical modelling tools — combining theoretical depth with practical training.In the morning, Prof. Dejun Dai of FIO delivered a training lecture titled "Wave-Turbulence Interaction-Induced Vertical Mixing and Its Effects in Ocean and Climate Models." The course provided an in-depth explanation of the critical role of waves in upper-ocean mixing processes and their influence on large-scale ocean and climate models, offering trainees an important theoretical framework for understanding multi-scale ocean dynamics. Prof. Dai's presentation progressed from fundamental concepts to advanced applications, closely linking complex turbulence mixing theory with practical parameterisation schemes in ocean models and sparking lively discussion among the trainees.

Following this, Dr. Linlin Zhao delivered a frontier lecture on "Global Marine Governance under the Background of the BBNJ Agreement," broadening the trainees' perspective from a macro-level view of international ocean law and global governance, and demonstrating that marine science extends beyond technical dimensions to encompass international rule-making and global governance.

In the afternoon, Prof. Jiechen Zhao led a training session on "Application and Practice of the Toolkits," guiding trainees through hands-on exercises with ocean numerical modelling tools. Working collaboratively in groups at the computer lab, trainees translated the morning's theoretical knowledge into practical skills. During the exercise, trainees actively engaged with the software and discussed operational challenges with the lecturer, creating a dynamic and productive classroom atmosphere.


After the session, trainees from Group 1 delivered their presentations, sharing their research backgrounds and learning reflections. Trainees from different countries exchanged views on shared marine science interests, resulting in vibrant discussions.Today's programme fully embodied the ODC training's signature "theory + practice + exchange" integrated teaching approach. From physical mechanisms to global governance, from classroom lectures to hands-on exercises, the curriculum balanced scientific depth with practical breadth.
