11th Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific was held in QIngdao

During 21-23 April 2017, the 11th Intergovernmental Session of the IOC Sub-Commission for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC-XI) was successfully held in Qingdao, China. It was hosted by State Oceanic Administration and The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO and organized by the First Institute of Oceanography, State Oceanic Administration and the secretariat of WESTPAC. The meeting reviewed the present WESTPAC strategic directions and associated activities, deliberated on and came up with concrete action plans towards the future strategic and programmatic development of WESTPAC, particularly taking into account the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
During this Intergovernmental Session, Prof. Fangli Qiao, Secretary General of FIO, was selected as the vice chairperson for the next biennium. As a senior scientist, Prof. Qiao is responsible for many international projects including Response of Marine Hazards to Climate Change in the Western Pacific (ROSE), Ocean Forecasting System (OFS), Monsoon Onset Monitoring and its Social & Ecosystem Impacts (MOMSEI)and UNESCO/IOC Regional Training and Research Center on Ocean Dynamics and Climate (UNESCO/IOC-ODC center).
